What will you do if you had the chance to control things using nothing but your mind?

Just when we’re getting the hang of the Nintendo Wii’s control, here comes a now development that will surely cause a stir in the gaming industry. You think. It happens. Simple as that. Here’s what it looks like:

This isn’t a mind game. Mind control stories are now reality and there are two companies that are offering brain interfaces for gaming. No more flaying your arms all over the room. You just have to think about it and that’s it. Both Emotiv Systems and NeuroSky have released headsets with brainwave sensors that are designed to sense brain activity. The headsets make educated guesses on the type of thinking you’re doing and translating it into action.

Emotiv Systems’ EPOQ neuroheadset is already a work in progress. Judging from the demos done with it, this headset is ready to be used as a game controller. All it needs know is a game to fully take advantage of its use.

Same goes with NeuroSky’s Mindset, though it is less complicated in design than Emotiv’s. NeuroSky has implied that their products have some medicinal benefits. By using Mindset in games, it can teach kids with ADHD to relax. As of press time, NeuroSky is working with Sega for ideas on how to use their product in games.

On the two, NeuroSky is the cheapest with a price tag of $50 while Emotiv Systems costs around $300. This gives NeuroSky an advantage.

Expect both companies to come out with games using their headset late this year. I hope that the games are of good quality. And when that time comes, Nintendo Wii’s days of supremacy are numbered.
