Console Wars: The Latest Worldwide Sales Figures

Who’s the top dog? XBOX and PS3 fans, read on and weep.
Wii are the King
The Nintendo Wii holds on to No. 1 by getting 42.5% of the market with 12.12 millions consoles sold, besting Microsoft XBOX360 by over half a million units, or 40.4%. Sony’s PlayStation 3 still lags way behind with a dismal 17.1% market share. However, the coming holiday season may prove decisive, as changes can surely take place in the next few months.
We’ll see if Nintendo can defend its slot from Microsoft’s recent blockbuster release of action-packed HALO 3. But XBOX faces the challenge of a loyal Nintendo fan-base in Japan. If it can break that market, Bill Gates will have every reason to dance the cha-cha. As for Sony’s consecutive price cuts, the effects are yet to be seen.
DS Lite is portables heavyweight
Meanwhile, in the portables division, the Sony PSP is taking a heavy beating from Nintendo DS/DS Lite. The DS gobbled up 67.9% of portables sales, which translates into a whopping 51 million units. PlayStation Portable’s 24 million units in sales is pretty impressive as well, but it seems that with a market this big, Sony can do a lot better.
