Are Wii Fit or Are Wii Fat?

Would you trust a machine to tell you how healthy you are? Wii Fit is being billed as the exercise game for the whole family. Yet issues arise about Wii Fit’s capability to accurately calculate a young child’s Body Mass index (BMI).
Obesity experts in the UK have condemned Nintendo after Wii Fit called a perfectly fit 10 year old girl kid fat. This made the kid’s dad angry.
“She is a perfectly healthy, 4ft 9in tall 10-year-old who swims, dances and weighs only six stone (84 lbs). She is solidly built but not fat. She was devastated to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her she isn’t.”
With the Ashley twins, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and other “skinny” celebrities as role models, labeling a kid as fat even if she’s not can greatly affect her and how she views her self. Wii Fit’s BMI system must be revamped or at least have a warning that the BMI is not appropriate for younger children.
According to obesity experts, kids’ BMI varies every month because of developing body. It is quite possible that a kid can be stocky but fit at the same time.
Well Nintendo, through a spokesperson apologized for the labels used in the game but won’t be putting up a warning in the game any time soon.
“Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development,” the company said through a spokesman.
Wii Fit is selling like hot cakes at present and is in the Amazon’s top ten videogame list but I’m beginning to sense that this hype will end soon. I should have seen this Sarcastic Gamer’s Wii Fit parody before I wrote that review on the Wii Fit.
