Wii Fit: Staying Fit Can be Fun

Gone are the days when gamers aren’t conscious of their health. First there was Wii Sports. I knew someone that bought the Wii because of this game. She wanted to have some sort of exercise and she wasn’t getting it by spending countless hours on WOW.

Wii Sports was a welcome break for gamers. And now Nintendo is banking on that success by developing something similar to it. Nintendo is set to release Wii Fit in May.

Wii FitWii Fit will turn your living room into your own private gym. It comes with a Wii Balance Board. Whether you want to do yoga, balance games, muscle workouts or aerobic exercises, there is an activity for everyone. There are more than 40 activities and exercises to choose from giving you variety, making it exciting for everyday fun.

You control on-screen action with your movements on the Wii Balance Board. It gauges where your balance and body mass are located to ensure that you perform every exercise correctly.

Wii Fit will be challenging for the family and at the same time get all of you in shape. Up to 8 profiles can be made with the game and each one can track their own improvement. As you progress in the game, you will unlock new exercises and activities.

Don’t be surprised if one day you meet a gamer with a physique that a sports jock would be envy of. With Wii Sports, you will level up in game and in real life as well!

Mind Control Stories: Is your brain game?

What will you do if you had the chance to control things using nothing but your mind?

Just when we’re getting the hang of the Nintendo Wii’s control, here comes a now development that will surely cause a stir in the gaming industry. You think. It happens. Simple as that. Here’s what it looks like:

    Mind Control

This isn’t a mind game. Mind control stories are now reality and there are two companies that are offering brain interfaces for gaming. No more flaying your arms all over the room. You just have to think about it and that’s it. Both Emotiv Systems and NeuroSky have released headsets with brainwave sensors that are designed to sense brain activity. The headsets make educated guesses on the type of thinking you’re doing and translating it into action.

Guillaume Reymond and the Game Over Project

        ytva_badge-300×50.jpg

Congratulations to the Game Over crew headed by Guillaume Reymond! Their video on the Human Tetris got the nod for the Creative category of the 2007 Youtube Video Awards. Here’s more about their work from their website:

GAME OVER is one of the art projects developed by the Swiss artist Guillaume REYMOND (NOTsoNOISY creative agency). It consists of a series of collaborative animation movies which revive some of the very first video games. The pixels are replaced by a group of real human-beings that are moving from seat to seat in a theatre during about 4 to 6 hours. Each “pixel” has its own rules and decides what s/he wants to do for each picture. Once all these pictures are turned into a short animation movie, a giant human-scale video game unfolds “live”.

Nintendo Memory Games: Why Brain Age is still the King

brain-gym-exercises.jpgGone are the days when games were played to entertain us. With the advent of Brain Age, there came a slew of Nintendo memory games in the market. “Edutainment” is what this genre is called. One thing that’s bothering me is, are these games effective? Do they really exercise our brains or is this just another marketing strategy so that parents will not be guilty with letting their kids spend their time playing games?

Let’s look at the undisputed champ of all Nintendo memory games, Brain Age. This game promises that by playing it for minutes per day, it will improve your brain. I have a confession to make. I enjoyed playing Brain Age, well solving Sudoku mostly. What makes it stand out from the competition is that it offers plenty of puzzles to solve everyday without being monotonous. Even though the game’s almost 2 years old, it is still the game to beat in this genre.

Up, up and away: ‘Super Wii’ defies gravity

nintendo_wii2.jpgThese are the signs of the times. From all indications, sales of consumer electronics in the US will be taking a beating. A survey was conducted by ChangeWave between February 18-25, and the results just came out. Some 4,427 people were asked about their outlook on popular gadgets, including digital cameras, mp3 players, video game consoles and other high-tech guilty pleasures.

The verdict? Only 19% of survey respondents say they’ll spend more on electronics over the next 90 days. That’s bad, very bad when compared to 33% who say they’ll spend less. Below is a chart of the survey results over the last 15 months. From this, it’s easy to see that people are in the mood to spend just before Christmas. After that, the trend is that they don’t spend as much, which is understandable. However, the latest survey posts the widest gap ever recorded for the blue and the red lines at 14%. We’ll have to wait and see if this divergence continues or if the gap narrows to more acceptable levels in the succeeding months.
